Recently, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the U.S. revealed the hidden usability and meaning of mass spectrometry images. The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) worked with 20 different laboratories from different locations across the globe to study and resolve the issues in time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF- SIMS). According to the study, a new algorithm has now been developed to resolve the issues and enable the formation of better images. Gas cluster ion beams (GCIB) have also deeply advanced the study of biological and organic materials such as organic light emitting diodes, polymer blends, and optical devices. With the help of surface analytical technologies such as time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF- SIMS) and gas cluster ion beams (GCIB), it will be easy to obtain 3D reconstructions and profiles of the samples.

At the National Physical Laboratory, samples were produced and disseminated to all 20 participating laboratories for further study by using the techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF- SIMS). These two techniques were used for mere comparison. The comparison proved that with the help of X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), most of the participants were able to understand the technique to overcome the listed issues and matrix effects.

Earlier this year, the National Physical Laboratory had published a report in the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry. This was considered to be the first major study investigating the matrix effects in organic secondary ion mass spectrometry.
