Rigid Packaging Solutions become Backbone of Food and Beverage Industry: Here’s how

Several industry sectors have substantially benefited from economic growth in emerging economies; the packaging sector is one of them. The massive transportation activities that cater to a large number of industries such as manufacturing, consumer goods, food and beverage, and others, heavily depend on strong packaging solutions for minimum damage and maximum protection of products.

However, the packaging need is dependent on the type of commodity. While fragile, easily-breakable commodities such as glass require multi-layered specialty packaging in the value chain, other products such as steel auto parts and similar tough commodities are relatively free of such requirements.

Rigid Packaging Extends Product Shelf Life Too

Packaging is essentially needed for trade, storage, and distribution purposes. However, another important characteristic of packaging is to extend the shelf life of perishable products and create a brand identity. Recently in a milestone development, Agrindus, a Brazil-based agribusiness, has been successful in increasing the shelf life of fresh milk through innovative rigid packaging. The rigid plastic bottles used for packaging milk were incorporated with silver-based nano-particles possessing antimicrobial, bactericidal, and self-sterilizing properties. Thus, premium quality pasteurized fresh whole milk bottled in this newer packaging is shelf-suitable for 15 days, increasing from its earlier shelf life of seven days.

Silica coated silver-based nano-particles, being inert in nature, have no risk of detaching from the packaging. Thus, milk does not come in contact with the packaging material. This addresses the toxicity concerns associated with such packaging.

What is Driving Use of Rigid Packaging?

Food, consumer goods, and industrial products are some of the sectors that offer large business opportunities for rigid plastic packaging companies. Several molded products and packaging applications require packaging with specific physical and functional properties for such purposes.

Specialty packaging manufactured for specific needs is dependent on the grade and type of material used, mold design and processing, material recipes and additives for the final performance of the product. Hence, it is essentially important to see if the product fulfills the requirement of the packers, end users, and legislation.

Transparency Market Research (TMR) states that the global rigid packaging market will grow at a CAGR of 4.5% from 2015 to 2021. TMR presents a lowdown how the food and beverage sector is bolstering the growth of the rigid packaging market:

  • In emerging economies, increasing purchasing power has been a major reason for the adoption of western eating habits. This has benefited the packaging industry significantly, which caters to the food and beverage sector for specialty packaging products.

  • Globalization, increasing foreign travel, and a fancy for newer products has led to a surging demand for ready-to-eat packaged foods that need specialty packaging. This in turn is fueling the growth of the global rigid packaging market.

  • Transportation of packaged food over long distances requires specialty packaging that can prevent food from spoilage and withstand rough handling. Hence, the demand for rigid packaging is on the rise for these applications.
