3D mapping and modeling is a method used to create 3D models of various objects. Polygonal modeling, splines and patches modeling, primitive modeling, and non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) modeling are some of the main methods used to generate 3D models. 3D mapping and modeling can allow virtual creation of a prototype in various industries such as automotive, construction, and healthcare.

3D modeling is a crucial component in modern automotive design. Due to the intricacies of advanced automotive systems and the changes they necessitate in other aspects of car design, 3D modeling is seen as the perfect solution to examine and analyze vehicle designs before they are put into production. Singapore, one of the most advanced and richest countries in the world, announced in 2014 plans to 3D model the whole city-state. Recently, the project won the government’s Be Inspired award in a 2015 conference. Expected to be completed in three years, the project aims to employ satellite imagery to map out the whole of the island country. Using a combination of satellite imagery and building information modeling (BIM), the project aims to streamline the administration of Singapore. The project also aims to highlight Singapore’s tourist attractions via a web-based 3D model. With the tourism industry booming in southeast Asia, Singapore seems to have caught on in a big way.


Lockheed Martin, one of the premier names in aviation, recently presented the UAE an efficient way of managing its many skyscrapers: an unmanned drone equipped with 3D modeling capabilities. The 2.3-kg quadcopter, called Indago, could be used to inspect and oversee the high-risers in the UAE. This provides an effective way of overseeing construction of new buildings as well as carrying out inspections of existing structures. This presents the new way in urban management solutions, with automation and digitalization taking over from manual supervision, which can be risky in the case of skyscrapers, and often less effective than mechanized devices.

Construction Industry Leads Demand from Global 3D Mapping and Modeling Market

Unsurprisingly, according to data released by leading market analysis firm Transparency Market Research, demand from the global 3D mapping and modeling market was led by the construction industry in 2013. The rising demand for smart infrastructure in developing economies is expected to propel the construction industry’s demand for 3D mapping and modeling in the coming years. The segment is expected to rise at an 8% CAGR from 2014 to 2020.

Due to early acceptance and consequently wide spread of advanced technologies and modern infrastructure, North America was the leading regional segment of the global 3D mapping and modeling market in 2013. The region will maintain its dominance in the global market, which is expected to exhibit a 6.40% CAGR as it rises from a valuation of US$2.9 bn in 2013 to US$4.4 bn in 2020.
