Global Home Rehabilitation Products and Services Market Fueled by Rising Independence of Post-op Patients and Geriatrics

The global home rehabilitation products and services market, according to Transparency Market Research, is poised to expand at a healthy CAGR of 8.50% from 2015 to 2023. The value of this market was pegged at US$84.2 bn in 2014 and this is forecast to rise to US$176.1 bn by 2023. This growth can be attributed to a number of factors, including the burgeoning presence of chronic diseases, the growing base of major consumers, the changing demographics of the global population, and the significantly rising patient pool and disposable income in emerging economies.

Looking to make the most of these growth factors are the major players within the global home rehabilitation products and services market: Stryker Corporation, Invacare Corporation, ergoline GmbH, Prism Medical Ltd., TecnoBody S.r.l., Active Medical & Rehabilitation Services Pvt. Ltd., Ekso Bionics Holdings, Inc., Patterson Medical Holdings, Inc., Medline Industries, Inc., AliMed, Inc., Hocoma AG, DJO Global, Inc., and RehabCare.

Rising Trend of Home Rehabilitation Spurring Technological Innovations

Recognizing the success of the home rehabilitation products and services market, a number of players in various verticals of the healthcare industry have begun focusing on developing equipment and gadgets that can benefit patients undergoing rehabilitation at home. Earlier this month, researchers at the Imperial College London and the University of Southampton announced their plan to develop a wearable technology that will help stroke victims with their recovery. One of the main inspirations for this new tool, as told by Jane Burridge, the lead researcher of the project, is the fact that stroke rehabilitation is becoming increasingly home-based owing to the rapid discharge of patients from the hospital. Home rehabilitation, Burridge says, encourages independence among the patients and also avoids a number of problems associated with prolonged stays in hospitals.

The wearable sleeve works with an app and uses MMG microphone-like sensors and inertial measurement units. The sensors are capable of detecting muscle vibrations and can produce the required data, which can then be transferred on to a tablet with the help of an app. Doctors can use this information to evaluate a patient’s recovery.

Why North America Holds the Largest Share in the Global Market

Among the five major regional segments that comprise the global home rehabilitation products and services market, namely Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa, North America dominates the overall market. In 2014, North America held the largest share in the home rehabilitation products and services market owing to a number of factors such as the growing prevalence of geriatrics, the rise in access to quality healthcare, the availability of reimbursement policies from private and public health insurance companies, the increased prevalence of chronic diseases, the surge in the number of surgical procedures, the rising incidence of respiratory infections, and the mounting cost of hospital stay.

Scientists in New Zealand Report Advances in Medical Sensor Technology with Real-time Estrogen Sensor

With numerous new breakthroughs in sensor technology to improve the state of patient monitoring being reported, there is a palpable interest in conducting more research in this field. In what comes as yet another addition to the bevy of medical sensors, a team of scientists at the Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) has developed a sensor that can detect estrogen even in low levels more rapidly and accurately than many of the current devices available on the market.

The sensor works by transmitting an electric signal when it detects the presence of estrogen in liquids. This sensor attracts aptamers - small DNA pieces that attach to estrogen molecules - to carbon nanotubes, which in turn emit a minute electric signal on detecting estrogen molecules.

To study this medical sensor further, researchers tested the device in two lengths – while one had a length of 35 units, the other was 75 units long. On comparing these two devices with different lengths, scientists found that the shorter device was able to flag the presence of estrogen by emitting a minute electrical signal. The longer device, on the other hand, failed to trigger any response to the presence of estrogen in the fluid sample.

The team has now narrowed its focus on the shorter device, tweaking it further to see how it performs in an actual biological fluid. The new device could offer a range of advantages, such as real-time readings, minimal power usage, and ease of use owing to its simple design. The team wants to also expand the applications of this medical sensor beyond estrogen tests, and will soon be developing similar sensors for other diagnostic purposes. From a broader perspective, the diagnostics market is currently in a state of rapid growth, with more consumers seeking home-use diagnostic kits.

Allergan to Acquire Medical Device that Helps Treat Protruding Ears

Allergan, a leading manufacturer of aesthetics devices and pharmaceutical products, will be adding a new product that helps correct prominent ears. The company is doing so with the acquisition of Northwood Medical Innovation Ltd – the developer of a novel implant technology called earFold™ that helps correct both symmetrical and asymmetrical protruding ears. What also makes this device—which was given the CE mark in April 2015—an attractive investment proposition is that it can be used in patients older than 7 years.

The device has been accredited for use by plastic surgeons, maxillo-facial surgeons, and plastic surgeons as well as otolaryngologists in the UK. Once the deal is through, Allergan plans to commercialize the product across Europe. Following this, Allergan said that it will continue to explore new avenues in other countries (including the United States) with the aim of eventually launching the product in these markets.

earFold™ brings hope to people suffering from protruding ears because it is implantable, minimally invasive, and promises to deliver a consistently positive outcome. The entire implant procedure can be completed in about 20 minutes in an outpatient setting.

According to the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs, protruding ears affect approximately 100 million people worldwide. Besides causing insecurities about appearance, medical experts say that protruding ears could have a considerable psychological impact on people, especially if the condition causes the person to experience bullying or teasing.

What prompted Allergan’s move into this space is the current gap that exists in the market for treating prominent ears. Conventionally, patients wanting to cure the condition had to undergo surgery (pinnaplasty or otoplasty), which, besides being painful, could also lead to scarring and infection. There have been instances where patients also had to undergo re-do procedures because of a relapse or outcomes that were not at par with expectations. Medical experts also report that several people desist from surgery after being informed about the risks.

However, that hasn’t really stopped people from undergoing surgeries to make their ears more symmetrical. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery puts the estimates for ear surgery operations at 247,518 as of 2014. With a device such as earFold™, this number could increase in the future.

Could New ‘Lab in a Needle’ Medical Device Pave Way for Instant Diagnostic Tests?

If a new prototype being developed by researchers from the United States and Singapore finds success, diagnostic laboratories will be able to conduct routine lab tests in a matter of minutes, and not hours or days. The innovative medical device, being termed a ‘lab in a needle’, can be used both on field and in a laboratory. The team of researchers says that the device could be used not just for diagnosis, but also as a tool to monitor the progress of maintenance therapies.

Researchers working on this study hail from the U.S.-based Houston Methodist and Singapore’s NTU and SIMTech. The researchers recently evaluated the prototype of the medical device by conducting a common liver-function test to check ALT and AST enzyme levels in the blood, and the results were found to be accurate. The researchers opine that the test could prove especially useful in cancer cases where regular liver screening tests are required during the chemotherapy phase. The current set of tests used for determining enzyme levels in the liver can take a few days before the results are obtained. These tests also often require doctors to send samples to external laboratories. But if the ‘lab in a needle’ project is successful, this test can be conducted conveniently within a doctor’s office and the results would take approximately 30 minutes.

This will be possible thanks to a chip that is placed inside the prototype device, and features microfluidics and a miniature motor. The sample is prepared within the medical device, allowing for its instant analysis. The sample is amplified using another connected chip for accurate results.

The researchers claim that this is the first time that various stages in the diagnostic process, right from sample preparation to the measurement of enzyme levels, have been integrated in this fashion. The success of this product could potentially lead to its mass production and prove disruptive in the diagnostic technologies domain.

Israel-based medical devices manufacturer, InSightec, has received the U.S. FDA’s stamp of approval for its new ultrasound technology. The technology is indicated for the treatment of fibroids in women. The approval comes at a time when InSightec is trying to command a more dominant position in the U.S. medical devices market by raking in more revenue. The company has also been looking for greater funding avenues in a bid to support its current R&D activities.

The device, called ExAblate, now also carries an expanded label stating that the device is approved for use in women suffering from symptomatic uterine fibroids but who wish to keep their uterus intact so that they do not lose the option of becoming pregnant in the future. According to a statement by InSightec, the approval for the device by FDA was based on clinical data taken from 118 women who became pregnant after being treated with the ultrasound-technology-based device.

The new label for ExAblate is a well-timed achievement for the company, CEO Kobi Vortman stated in an official release. The company regards the new expanded label as a ‘major milestone’, the company’s CEO further stated in its statement. Currently, the company is in the process of running clinical trials to establish the efficacy of the device in treating multiple conditions and diseases. The functioning of the device is unique in that it combines two techniques—ultrasound ablation and magnetic resonance imaging—to remove problematic tissue via a noninvasive procedure. The company states that its device is capable of treating not just uterine fibroids, but also neuropathic pain and Parkinson’s.

The company currently manufactures products for sale in the European Union region and the device is used for a variety of indications. ExAblate already carries a signoff from the FDA for treating uterine fibroids as well as pain management in bone metastases in cases where radiation is not a feasible option.

InSightec is a company that’s already backed by GE, but will now set out to seek more funds so it can conduct more intensive R&D. The company says that it has already pumped in over US$200 mn into R&D initiatives.

Novartis and Google on Track to Begin Testing ‘Smart Lens’ on Humans in 2016

Novartis, the Swiss drug maker, has been forging ahead steadily over the past year with exceptionally innovative projects to gain an unbeatable edge over the competition. And it doesn’t seem to be done innovating yet. It has now partnered with tech titan Google to develop a smart contact lens for presbyopia and to monitor the wearer’s glucose levels. The two firms have their eyes firmly set on 2016 to test the smart contact lens. This leaves the competition with hardly any time to catch up, giving the two firms an almost most early mover advantage in the medical devices industry.

These fears were substantiated by the company’s CEO Joe Jimenez, who recently said that the project was progressing well and that the first prototype will likely be ready as scheduled. The companies expect that the first prototype will be tested on humans in 2016. The first prototype of the smart lens will be tested on people with presbyopia (farsightedness caused due to aging). Once the vision correction capabilities of the product are clearly understood, the subsequent processes will be set on track. While things certainly are moving on schedule for Novartis and Google, it be at least five years before the product is launched on the market.

Interestingly, the smart contact lens is the only vision-related innovation that Novartis has undertaken with Google. In 2014, the two companies made a joint announcement about teaming up for smart contact lenses that will help diabetics keep a tab on their blood glucose levels. The lens will feature a miniaturized sensor that carries the capability to provide blood glucose level readings by analyzing the wearer’s tears.

Ocular medical devices are increasingly making their presence felt in the medical devices industry and this has opened new avenues for research and collaboration.

NeuroMetrix’s Wearable Pain Alleviation Device to Hit Retail Shelves Thanks to New Agreement

The launch of a new wearable pain relief device could improve the way people suffering from nerve pain, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis manage their painful condition. The wearable device, developed by NeuroMetrix, will now be available in supermarkets thanks to the company inking a distribution deal with Advantage Consumer Healthcare.

The nerve stimulation device, called Quell, can be worn on the upper calf by patients and the stimulation is delivered through an electrode. The stimulation, which starts at the click of a button, leads the release of endogenous opioids from the brain into the spine. This process helps block pain signals, according to NeuroMetrix.

Available with an application to help patients track their therapy more effectively and in real-time, the device could bring a ray of hope to people who live with several painful conditions. NeuroMetrix says that the device has been programmed to read the activities of the patient – thus, when a patient is asleep, an accelerometer inside the device automatically adjusts the device.

Currently, Quell is available on the internet and through a network of select healthcare practitioners. But with the device’s retail launch now being made possible thanks to the deal with Advantage, more patients will find it easier to access and use the wearable pain relief device.

It was in July 2014 that Quell was given the stamp of approval by the FDA with a 510(k) clearance which allowed NeutoMetrix to market the device as over-the-counter product.

Interest in exploring the potential of medical devices has been mounting for the past few months. From smartwatches to wristbands to a gamut of other wearable medical gizmos, real-time monitoring has made therapies more timely and effective. In several cases, medical devices such as Quell also help collect and store patient data, which in turn helps devise personalized therapies.

Eximo’s Series A Funding Round Successful; Funding to be Used for Clinical Trials

Eximo Medical, a company specializing in medical devices manufacturing, has announced that it has successfully raised US$1.6 million via its Series A funding. The company’s funding round was led by Accelmed, an investment fund that focuses on medical device companies. Other notable participants in the funding endeavor were a private investor (whose name was not publicized in the company’s announcement) and Alfred Mann Institute at the Technion 9which works under the aegis of the Technion R&D Foundation.

One of the most innovative products that Eximo has developed is a hybrid catheter. This patented medical device, which carries the name brand Cathi™, is directly connected to a laser system. This pulsed laser system is programmed to operate at a 355 nanometer UV. The tip of the catheter fuses laser ablation abilities with a mechanical blunt blade. With this combination, a marked improvement in accuracy has been observed. This also helps achieve superior precision when being passed through a blocked vessel, irrespective of the vessel’s size or the type of lesion.

The new medical device is unique in that it carries the potential to help optimize the degree of performance and safety associated with vessel perforation. This new system’s performance as well as that of its catheters will be tested in several rounds of human studies slated to be conducted in Europe and Israel toward the last quarter of 2015. The funding raised recently will be used for these medical studies, said a press release issued by Eximo. Currently, Peripheral Artery Disease is a multi-billion dollar market that affects an estimated 8 million to 12 million Americans. In fact, PAD has been identified as a leading cause (66%) of all limb amputations – a procedure that continues to beset patients even today.

Indian Company Develops Cost-Effective Portable Diagnostic Device that can Test for Range of Diseases

Even as companies dealing in medical device technologies stumble upon new business opportunities in low-income and emerging economies, a diagnostics company based in India hopes to break a barrier with the introduction of its new device, which it terms a ‘lab-on-cartridge’. The device has been developed using inexpensive technologies that carry the capability to instantly scan samples for a list of diseases and infections.

According to market analysts, the Indian company, DiaSys Diagnostics, has in its hands a product that carries several advantages over those of its counterparts. The device hopes to solve a larger problem that’s characteristic of developing countries – a lack of equipment that can perform quick and accurate tests. There is a massive white space when it comes to offering cost-effective diagnostic equipment to labs in such countries, where clinics (especially those in rural areas) are not adequately equipped. This is where the importance of point of care devices comes to the fore.

Point-of-care devices such as this can be effectively deployed in rural areas where patients need access to better diagnostics but clinics aren’t able to provide them at affordable prices. With the new ‘lab-on-cartridge’ device, a single finger-prick blood sample can carry out a bevy of tests. The product, which is being sold under the name brand QDx InstaLab, makes use of easily available and affordable microfluidic cartridge technology, coupled with nanomaterial-based biosensors (made of special grade plastic). With a single blood sample, the device is able to effectively able to check whether organs are functioning as required.

The device can effectively check for conditions such as liver diseases, diabetes and kidney diseases. The device also offers details on cholesterol levels and can identify risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases. These results are provided in a span of less than 10 minutes. DiaSys plans to target this device at rural, semi-rural, third- and second-tier cities.

Vitreous Tamponades Market Expected to Reach USD 77.5 Million Globally in 2020: Transparency Market Research

According to a new market report published by Transparency Market Research “Vitreous Tamponades  Market (Tamponades Types: Gaseous Tamponades and Liquid Tamponades [Silicone Oil, Perfluorocarbons]) – Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2014 – 2020”, the global vitreous tamponades market was valued at USD 64.5 million in 2013 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.5% during the forecast period from 2014 to 2020 to reach USD 77.5 million in 2020.

Browse the full Vitreous Tamponades  Market report at http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/vitreous-tamponades-market.html

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, in 2013, 17 million cases of proliferative diabetic retinopathy were observed globally. Diabetic retinopathy cases exclusively require vitrectomy and therefore held responsible for driving the market for vitreous tamponades. Moreover, the growth of tamponades market is being driven by aging population and onset of diabetes which is occurring at an epidemic rate. Similarly, according to the International Diabetes Federation, around 300 million people were affected with diabetes globally in 2010 and this figure is likely to reach 438 million by 2030. Thus, rising diabetic cases that could lead to impaired vision and blindness if left untreated would rise the demand for tamponades.

Geographically, the global vitreous tamponade market has been segmented into four major regions: North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Rest of the World (RoW). North America was observed to be the largest regional market globally in terms of revenue in 2013. In the U.S. retinal detachment is one of the major causes of morbidity with an incidence between 10.1 and 17.9 per 100,000 populations. Furthermore, according to the data published by Medicare in Ocular Surgery News, the number of vitrectomy surgeries performed in the U.S. increased by around 80% in 2012 as compared to 1997. Hence, increased incidences of retinal detachment and augmented growth in number of vitrectomy surgeries were the major reasons held responsible for the dominant position of this region. Owing to on label usage of gaseous tamponades, physician preference and ease of use, gaseous tamponades accounted for the largest share of the market in North America. Silicone oils held less than 30% of the market share in 2013 due to high cost and requirement of repeated surgical interventions

Asia Pacific market on the other hand is anticipated to increase their market share and witness promising growth in the near future. Rising geriatric population which are prone to retinal disorders and rapidly evolving medical tourism industry in countries (such as India, Thailand, Singapore and others) are few key reasons that are anticipated to propel the growth of this market. Likewise, increasing incidence rate of type 1 & type 2 diabetes, expanding population base and rising healthcare awareness are other reasons that would indirectly increase the demand of tamponades in this region.

The RoW region is expected to follow the Asia Pacific region in terms of growth rate, making it the second fastest growing market for vitreous tamponades during the forecast period.  This is attributed to the growing awareness of vitreoretinal disorders in the African and Latin American region along with increased WHO initiatives such as the vision 2020 that have helped in the timely diagnosis of ophthalmic disorders.

The market for vitreous tampoandes is highly fragmented and each region of the market is dominated by a select number of players. For instance, the vitreous tampoandes industry in North America is dominated by Alcon and Valeant Pharmaceuticals which captures more than 78% of the market share. Furthermore, the Europe and Asian market is fragmented and is dominated by regional players. In these regions, giants such as Alcon and Valeant Pharmaceuticals does not account for a significant share in the vitreous tamponades market. The vitreous tamponades market, therefore, is characterized by the presence Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center B.V., Fluoron GmbH, Croma Pharma AG, and AL.CHI.MI.A Srl, Aurolab and others .

The global vitreous tamponades market is segmented by type as follows:

o  Global Vitreous Tamponade Market Revenue, by Types
o     Gaseous Tamponades
o     Liquid Tamponades
o   Silicone Oil
o   Perfluorocarbons
o  Global Vitreous Tamponades Market Revenue, by Geography
