Global OSS/BSS Market: Expansion of Telecommunication Industry Fuelling Market Growth at 12.7% CAGR

Operation support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS) are utilized by telecommunication service providers to manage their network and customer base. These systems ensure optimal user experience through services such as provisioning, billing, order management, and customer relationship management (CRM). Across the telecommunications industry, these systems are used to support several end-to-end services. The global OSS/BSS market is estimated to expand at a CAGR of     12.7% during the period between 2014 and 2020. The overall market was worth US$21.86 bn in 2013.

In the OSS segment, the majority of the demand was for service assurance and service fulfilment solutions in 2013. On the other hand, the growth of the BSS segment has been driven by the demand for customer management and revenue management services. It is estimated that in the long run, revenue management solutions will witness sustained demand across the globe. With several overlapping features, the line between OSS and BSS solutions has blurred, leading to market players offering both the solutions.

New Generation Operations Systems and Software (NGOSS) to Boost Global OSS/BSS Market

Increasing adoption of convergent billing systems and growing demand for customer care services from telecommunications industry are fuelling the growth of the global OSS/BSS market. The market has a huge opportunity to grow with the rollout of NGOSS. NGOSS (New Generation Operations Systems and Software) is the TeleManagement Forum business solution framework for the creation of next generation OSS/BSS software and systems. NGOSS aims to facilitate the rapid development of low cost and flexible OSS/BSS solutions to meet the business requirements. Some of the key elements of NGOSS are enhanced telecom operations map (eTOM), technology neutral architecture (TNA) and contract interface, shared information/ data model, and NGOSS compliance. However, there are concerns regarding the integration of new OSS/BSS solutions with existing customer care systems.

Network Functions Virtualization to be Successfully Validated by OSS/ BSS Vendors

Among the key trends in telecom industry, three revolutionary models for service-building have emerged namely the software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), and cloud. Though these models have been tested to validate them at the functional level, the present challenge is to validate them at the business level. The successful validation of NFV is expected to be largely through OSS and BSS vendors and systems. OSS/BSS operators are presently working on service-specific NFV trials and deployments to create technology silos under a common operations orchestration framework.  The operators are also working on modernizing the OSS, BSS, and network management systems.

It is estimated that by 2016, operations management would be more than just customer care and billing. If OSS/ BSS vendors are able to link SDN and NFV silos and build service agility and operations efficiency, there would be a huge opportunity for the development of the global OSS/ BSS market.

Growing Alliances among Major Players Leading to Expansion of OSS/BSS Market

Operations support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS) are used to support various management functions and end-to-end telecommunication services. While OSS are used to manage functions such as service provisioning, network inventory, fault management, and network configuration, BSS deal with order management, product management, customer management, and revenue management.

The global OSS/BSS market, as stated by Transparency Market Research, has already witnessed strong growth in the past and if market analysis is to be believed, the industry is expected to develop even more rapidly over the next five years. The OSS/BSS market was estimated to be worth US$21.86 billion in 2013 and is projected to rise to US$49.78 billion by 2020 at a strong CAGR of 12.7% during that period.

Driving Forces of the Worldwide OSS/BSS Market

There are several factors that have contributed to the growth of the global OSS/BSS market, as identified by a TMR report. These include:

  • Rising adoption of convergent billing solutions by networks, subscribers, and services across the globe
  • Growing demand for consistent high-speed connectivity in the developed markets of Europe and North America
  • Rapid development of the telecommunications industry, especially in emerging economies such as China and India
  • Surging demand for interactive, timely, and efficient customer care services
  • Network operators deploying service assurance and service fulfillment solutions in adherence to telecommunications standards and regulations
  • Rollout of the new generation of operation systems and software (NGOSS) framework and development of a repository of models, documents, and guidelines
  • Increasing demand for revenue management solutions in Asia Pacific and Rest of the World regions owing to diminishing average revenue per user (ARPU)

Collaborations and Strategic Alliances Strengthening Competitive Landscape

There have been numerous partnerships, joint ventures, mergers, and acquisitions in the global OSS/BSS market, which have changed the face of the vendor landscape to a great extent.

In March this year, Wipro Ltd. – a major information technology, business process services, and consulting company – joined hands with leading real-time billing and charging solutions firm Orga Systems to deliver a pre-integrated BSS solution. Wipro’s ‘Telco-in-a-box’ caters to communication service providers and mobile virtual network operators and was launched at this year’s Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona.

Telecom network vendor Ericsson announced last week its acquisition of Icon Americas, an IT services company dealing in OSS/BSS areas. Ericsson said that the move was aimed at boosting its presence in the Latin American telecom market and expanding OSS/BSS solutions in the region. Ericsson also acquired the telecommunication wing of China-based Sunrise Technology earlier in March, looking to strengthen its foothold in the world’s largest mobile market in terms of subscriptions. Seeking to increase its presence in the OSS/BSS market, Ericsson has in the past acquired many companies such as TimlessMIND in 2015, GEOSS in 2014, Telcocell and TeleOSS in 2013, and Telcordia in 2012.
