A study by the Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership (GARP) in association with the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy revealed that in Indian ICUs, the risk of infections caused by vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE), a deadly pathogen, is five times higher than in the rest of the world. Efforts to reduce the prevalence of HAIs have led to the extensive usage of formulations based on chlorhexidine gluconate to chemically disinfect ICUs and nursing tables in Indian hospitals.
Reasons behind Poor Infection Control Plans in Indian Hospitals
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recommends that hospitals create an infection control plan to prevent the occurrence of HAIs. The problem often lies with the hospitals not following the infection control practices to curb the prevalence of the infections. Flouting infection control practices has resulted in some of the underlying problems in the Indian hospitals:
- Increasing number of patients per bed at government hospitals
- Less staff than required in hospitals
- Weak surveillance by ineffective infection control committees
- Lack of educational programs for healthcare workers, addressing basic infection control issues
