With Britain Inching Closer to Standardized Tobacco Packaging, Industry Players Mull Legal Action

http://www.tmrblog.com/
After members of the parliament in the United Kingdom ratified their proposal to make standardized packaging mandatory for tobacco industries, the latter is almost certain to take legal action to challenge this move. However, industry experts are of the opinion that despite taking legal action, the tobacco industry would most likely be unsuccessful in stalling the implementation. Australia, which is on course to implement a similar law, has given the tobacco industry a sell-through window of just eight weeks, as compared to one year in the UK.

On March 11, 367 MPs in the UK voted in favor of standardized packaging for cigarettes whereas 113 voted against the legislation. This makes the UK the third country in the world to implement plain packaging for the tobacco industry. As part of the regulations, manufacturers of all branded packaging will be mandated under the law to sell their products in plain packaging across all retail outlets in the United Kingdom. The sale of packaging with brand names will have to cease by 20 May 2016, whereas a complete introduction of un-branded/plain packaging will have to come into effect starting 21 May 2017.

While many companies are mulling taking legal recourse, Japan Tobacco International (UK) has stated publicly that it is considering legal action to prevent this move from being implemented. The managing director of the company said that the move being proposed by the United Kingdom was an exact copy of the same legislation passed in Australia, where he claimed that plain packaging has not been effectual. He stated that this rule also goes against certain obligations under the WTO as well as UK and European laws. If the House of Lords substantiate the decision of the MPs, British American Tobacco said that it would initiate legal proceedings too. Similar thoughts were echoed by Imperial Tobacco.

U.S. - Ireland Research Collaboration Aims to Find New Semiconducting Materials to Bring Down Power Consumption in Mobile Devices

http://www.tmrblog.com/
Leading researchers from the United States and Ireland have joined hands to explore new semiconducting materials that could potentially bring down the amount of power consumed by mobile devices. This three-year research project will also find ways to improve the battery life of such devices. Researchers from various education and research institutes in the United States and Ireland will be a part of this comprehensive project, and will also explore new methods to miniaturize semiconductor parts and materials in transistors, which are an inextricable part of portable devices today.

The organizations that are participating in this project are: Tyndall National Institute and the Dublin City University, Queens University Belfast, the University of Texas at Dallas. Each of these organizations will receive funding from its respective government. The project, which is dedicated to the exploration and introduction of ultra-efficient electronic materials, has been christened Understanding the Nature of Interfaces in Two-Dimensional Electronic Devices (UNITE).

As part of the project, scientists will not only create, but thoroughly test Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), which are extremely thin, 2D semiconductor layers. These layers are about 100,000 times tinier than the smallest object that the naked human eye can see. According to research conducted on these materials till date, it has been found that TMDs could be the key to highly efficient computing and power usage.
According to lead researcher of the study, Dr. Paul Hurley from Tyndall, currently popular materials such as silicon are on the verge of reaching the upper limit on their performance. Hence, it is about time that the research community continued to explore new materials that could help increase performance and reduce power consumption in electronics.

If successful, the project could provide exciting discoveries relevant to server centers and data storage.

Expert Study Reveals How Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals are Draining Europe’s Healthcare Budget

http://www.tmrblog.com/
A recent study that appears in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, which is published by the Endocrine Society, reveals some highly uncomfortable truths about everyday items and their effect on our hormonal balance.

The study links about 5% of autism cases, lower IQ and adult obesity to items such as food containers, cosmetics, plastics, toys and furniture that contain chemicals which disrupt the endocrine system. These endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have caused a spiraling increase in the cost of healthcare in Europe. Shockingly, these costs attributed to EDCs are comparable to those of serious health issues such as mercury poisoning and lead poisoning. This study is being touted as the most comprehensive one published yet. EDCs are known to interfere with the regular and normal functions of the human endocrine systems, and these undesirable chemicals are contained in carpeting materials, food containers, furniture, cosmetics, plastics, and toys, among other items.

This new series of reports has been researched and compiled by the leading experts in the field of endocrine science. According to the team of experts, the total cost incurred from exposure to EDCs is pegged between €157bn and €270bn in Europe. Roughly, this translates into 1.23% of the total GDP of Europe.

According to a professor at the Harvard University, Philippe Grandjean, the most alarming aspect of these findings is that EDCs directly impact brain function among young people, who are the next generation citizens. This adds up the cost associated with treating brain function loss.

Besides the loss of IQ, adult obesity was the second-largest health concern linked to phthalates exposure. Phthalates are a chemical group commonly used in plastics. The price tag related to this health disorder was estimated to be €15.6 billion a year, the paper revealed.

Oil Price Plunge Takes its Toll as 1,500 Jobs Being Axed by South African Petrochemical Major Sasol

http://www.tmrblog.com/ Sasol Ltd, a major player in the petrochemicals domain in South Africa with operations spread globally, has announced that it will be laying off 1,500 people even as it reels under the vagarious oil prices. This will mark the biggest every round of layoffs in the company’s recent history.

And, it is not just employees that will bear the brunt of the erratic oil prices. Shareholders too, will see the company slash its dividend to cope up with low oil prices. Contrastingly, Sasol’s second-half profits in 2014 showed a spike.

According to figures available from public sources, the net profits of Sasol in the six-month period ending December 31 saw a 54% rise, reaching 19.54 billion South African rand, which translates to roughly US$1.62 billion. In 2013, in the corresponding period, the company’s net profits were valued at 12.71 billion rand for total revenue of 99.83 billion rand. In the year-earlier period, Sasol’s revenue was reported as 98.27 billion rand.

The company had made its decision to cut dividend earlier in February 2015. The company had then stated that a 12.5% cut to dividend was on the cards. This, the company said, was an effort to build its cash reserves through the forthcoming 30 months because of the low prices of oil globally.

The company also said that it had accepted about 1,500 voluntary redundancies between June and December 2014 as it was looking to slash payroll costs by a significant degree. The company said that it would continue to carry out ‘refinements’ to its organizational structure over besides effecting a 30-month freeze on hiring activity despite having around 1000 vacancies across the world. Sasol, which is headquartered in South Africa, also has a presence in Europe and the United States.
